Sea of Thieves How to Pick Up Chickens

'Sea of Thieves' Chickens and Pigs Guide: Where to Find and Catch Animals Out at Sea

One of the common early quests from the Merchant Alliance in Sea of Thieves is to hunt down and bring back pigs and chickens. Sounds easy enough, but don't be fooled by these little farm animals. These missions can be downright frustrating if you don't know where to look and what to do. Follow this guide for some helpful animal hunting tips. You can also check out our other Sea Of Thieves guides posted in the links at the bottom of the article.

Step 1: Get A Voyage

You're not collecting any animals until you get a mission from someone in the Merchant Alliance. To find the quest givers for this faction, look on docks at Outpost islands. The Merchant Alliance tends to hang out on them.

Once you find a mission, bring it to your ship to start, just like any other voyage. Once you start the voyage, you must return to the Merchant Alliance member to get your chicken coop. This box is like a treasure chest, in that you can't do anything else when carrying it (outside of climbing up and down ladders). It's a pain to carry around, but what are you gonna do?

Once the voyage has started, you can check what animals you'll need to return to the Merchant Alliance just like you'd check a treasure map. Hold RB, then select the list. Hold RT if you want a closer look.

Step 2: Catch those Chickens

Here's where things get vague. There are no set locations for pigs or chickens in Sea of Thieves. This means you'll have to pick an island, sail to it, and hope it has the critter you're looking for. If you're looking for pigs, they can often be seen along the shores right from your boat. Chickens are harder to spot and will require you to get off your boat and onto land.

I've had the best luck looking on larger islands for chickens. Pigs seem to be more common, and are scattered around the world on many islands. According to the Sea of Thieves Gamepedia Wiki, these are the following Sea of Thieves islands where chickens have been spotted:

  • Barnacle Cay
  • Cannon Cove
  • Crook's Hollow
  • Marauder's Arch
  • Old Faithful Isle
  • Shipwreck Bay
  • Thieves' Haven
  • Twin Groves
  • Wanderers Refuge

Once you find a chicken or pig, make sure you are carrying your coop . Chase after the animal you want, and hold RT when you're close. If you hold it long enough, the chicken/pig should get caught in the coop. You can drop the coop to see what animal you have caught, and make sure it's one you need. If it isn't, kill the animal with your sword to get the coop empty again. It's a little brutal, but there's no way to set animals free from coops.

Animals in coops don't like water , so be sure to keep them above water when swimming out to your boat. Also, make sure your boat is free from leaks before putting the animal down.

Step 3: Cash in

Once you have caught an animal, you'll need to sail to the outpost specified in the voyage. This will be printed on the mission paper, which can be found in the maps area by holding RB. Once at the specific outpost, talk to the Merchant Alliance member to hand over the animal.

These missions are timed, so be sure to check in on your watch every now and then. To use the watch, hold LB to bring up your gear, then press X for more gear. The watch looks like the compass, and should be on this screen. Hilding RT with the watch up will give you a closer look at the current date and time.
